The Nintendo Switch May Just Pull Me Back to Nintendo!
Imagine my surprise when friends shoot me messages about the Nintendo NX being showcased! I’m already sleep deprived, exhausted, overworked, and trying to ignore class assignments that I should be working on. So I open the link (in hopes to procrastinate even further) and wow… Nintendo is calling the NX device the “Nintendo Switch” and I have to say that it actually looks pretty damn neat.
First Thoughts
The device is a hybrid device (and you all know how I like my hybrid devices — as I type this on my surface book) which allows you to game while it’s connected to a hub device that displays the game to your TV, then you can attach the side controllers to the main device and slide it out of the hub and use it as a portable gaming device.
Overall it just looks neat, and I think what were viewing was in fact what they had at the given time, why? Because when they were displaying the new Zelda game I noticed that when it was running just on the portable version that there was frame rate and stutter images shown — NOTE: the device is not yet complete nor is the new Zelda game finished, I’m just saying that, if I’m correct about it being show as is, that I commend them for not showcasing the scripted or edited in video atop a green-display.
Practicality
So the NS (Nintendo Switch) tackles both couch-console-gaming, as well as portable gaming. But because the device is powerful enough to play, well – “console” games, so you expect it to be a bit big, well the size is a lot smaller than I thought – but it’s still pretty large for the portable aspect. I can already see companies now creating screen shields for it, and 3rd party controller modules for the sides that have buttons that are sunken in, in order to avoid it catching on to other materials in a bag or something.
It’s going to be interesting to see the way Nintendo envisions the device to carried around while in its portable aspect…
Game Library
One of my greatest gripes with Nintendo has been their game library. They’ve been so focused on pushing out their nostalgia trips far too much. Mario this, Mario that, Star Far this, another Mario that, Zelda redone once more after a flop with skyward sword, more Mario…
Now, based on the teaser we got from Nintendo, we saw the NS running SKYRIM! Good signs of them getting other developers working and moving their games to the Nintendo platform! Well… it’s still Nintendo which means probably won’t get the mod support we want, though we may get something.
So hopefully this is good signs for actual games to play for a fresh new device for a new era for Nintendo… but… we’ll wait and see.
Final Thoughts
I’m actually… and I’m surprised by this… excited for the NS! I’ve long fallen out of love with Nintendo and have generally been hating their movements as of late, but this is just a glimmering beacon of hope to me. The possibility of them moving forward with innovation (I hate that word) and no longer relying on their nostalgia and Member Berries to keep consumers.
Only time will tell, and hopefully when it launches we don’t see a ton of YouTube videos getting flagged for talking about the device and their games…
