Let's Talk About Apple's Recent Moves
Look, I’m not the biggest Apple fan – in most regards I very much dislike their practice and their ecosystem. Despite that, I acknowledge the great strides they’ve made, and the affect on technology they’ve been involved in for ages…
People are hitting at them way too hard.
Okay. The iPhone X is cool, but does a few ‘not-so-apple’ things that does leave many of us scratching our heads, but that doesn’t mean they’ve fallen off the deep end. They took a risk at something different, tripped up here and there (not properly using the flanking spaces of the notch), but it’s still a decent device… wouldn’t pay $1,000 for it – for any smartphone for that matter… but definitely nothing to nuke your love or view of Apple for.
What’s truly happening is, instead of Apple falling backwards at an alarming pace, other platforms and creators are slicing through that once dominated attention grabbing effect Apple had in the past. It’s not just about iOS vs Android, nor is it just Apple vs Samsung/Google — creators are just getting creative and are being held to standards of quality. As a double whammy… great devices at great prices are now a thing… so people (me) are being swayed (totally me) to these devices (so much me) instead of spending upwards of $850 for a device that will eventually get screen burning after a year and a half in (the LGv20).
That’s the case for me at least. Multiple devices, platforms, etc. all have quality. Despite the ecosystem you may find comfortable, every platform has problems, solutions, strengths, and weaknesses.
In closing – I, a pro-android google loving tech enthusiast and computer scientist, am just as put off by the Pixel 2 based on current rumors, as I am of the iPhone X. “Premium” is more or less snake oil nowadays.
