Did Google Impress at their Conference?

Google recently held a press conference where they unveiled a set of new devices! We got a chance to see two new phones:

  • The Nexus 5X, which is the successor to the previous Nexus 5
  • The Nexus 6P, which is the bigger and higher specked version of the 5x and the successor of the previous Nexus 6.

We were also shown the new Chrome Cast, and it’s new sibling, the Chrome Cast Audio (essentially the audio version of a chrome cast… obviously.)

Finally Google unveiled the Pixel C, which stands for “Pixel Convertible“, an android tablet that has an optional keyboard that connections via strong magnets that allows the user to pivot the screen in a nice and sturdy fashion.

Now the question we ask is: “Did Google Impress?” and the short answer that I personally have is, “Kinda?“.

The phones were definitely the star of the show, announcing two versions of the beloved Nexus lineup that’d been split with fans over the previous two versions. Now fans of the 5″ form factor are happy with the 5X, and us 6″ form factor lovers are also happy with the 6P! It’s no mistaking the fact that Google listened to fans and users, making sure to include a better camera, better body design, and even a new optional insurance plan – you know, for those who’re clumsy, or cautious.

The chrome casts weren’t that big of a deal however. Though the upgrades are not anything major, it’s nice to see that Google is catering to bettering the casting experience, which is also noted by the new cast audio which aims to give a cheaper option than buying an expensive blue tooth speaker.

The pixel c however is, to me, is the most complicated item showcased. It’s being suggested by many that it is designed to compete with the iPad pro and the Microsoft Surface – but I felt the same way about the pixel c as I did with the iPad pro as in “I would not consider this a ‘pro’ device to compete with the surface line.
