Canonical 'Apparently' Cancels "Ubuntu for Android"
You might have heard by now, but Canonical has canceled the development of “Ubuntu for Android”, which is basically their project to have a phone running android, switch to Ubuntu when docked and display that Ubuntu OS on a monitor.
I rather enjoyed the project in general! It served as a possible way to help many students and individuals in the workplace. It would be a way to save money, why buy a high end cellphone and a work computer when all you’d need is the phone and a dock – and potentially any monitor and keyboard.
The news was discovered when a bug report slipped on Ubuntu’s site as it wasn’t set for public view –
Nevertheless, it’s a shame to see this project end – although apparently if Canonical gets more support from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), they’ll bring the project back to life. I would not mind seeing Cyanogen Inc. jumping in to help, but I also don’t see Canonical being effective in their project strategy. It feels they’re more focused on UbuntuTV and their new cloud system to fully do this project justice.
That being the case, I wouldn’t mind an android phone, that once connected, would boot into Fedora 😉
Edit: The cached site from launchpad, where the bug report was listed and later removed, can seen [HERE]
Apparently Canonical has responded to Android Authority about the matter and stated that it’s not really “canceled” but rather “not active”. Which falls into line as being canceled unless further support from OEMs are given.
